ADJUSTMENT TO ENGLISH 4

NEW ENGLISH 4 CURRICULUM

This year while the freshmen, sophomores and juniors were picking out their classes for the next school year, everyone was informed on how there will be a new English 4 class.

This new class will have specialized material that will cover Missouri State, career, and ACT prep standards. Instead of many different options for English classes that are a semester long, everything will be moved into one year long class.

English teacher Jasmine Brown shared how this change will benefit students.

“They’ll have the same instructor all year and they won’t be bouncing around to potentially four different teachers, and the teachers can set those expectations in the beginning and throughout the school year keep it after they have built rapport,” Brown said. “But also I just think that this new curriculum that English 4 will have is just very clear cut, like what the tasks are, what the tests are, and what the students should be getting out of it.”

Brown shared if the new change will help or hurt students academically.

“It depends,” Brown said. “I am a little heartbroken that they aren’t genre based anymore because I do think that like a kid that potentially signs up for Women’s Literature, they are getting something from the teacher that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to get. At the junior level we have African American Literature. If we were to get rid of that, I can’t guarantee that a teacher won’t be able to give the student all these great wealths of black authors, if they have all of these other authors that they have to cover as well.”
